Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for art from her aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to give her the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a young publicist for a studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. In addition, she launched several lifestyle and promotion networks such as Urban Beauty Collective.
